Q – “So you've been using the coupon for 3 months and only got 5 or 6 so far? What about the newspaper ad, and how much have you spent so far."

A – “Yes, we've only been marketing the coupon and newspaper ad for 3 months, the newspaper hasn't brought any customers in yet. All in all we've spent $5000.00 on the graphic designer, and about $1200.00 per month on the newspaper and coupon. Our graphic designer says that his work is unique because it will create brand awareness, and that I just have to keep placing the ads and coupons, and pretty soon we'll get lots of new customers in.”

After a few moments of stunned silence, I said to her, “Let me get this straight. “You spent around $8,600 so far, and you only got 5 or 6 new customers?!

“Umm… Yes. Is that bad?”

“Please forgive me if I sound harsh. That’s HORRIBLE! You’ve been hoodwinked by an ignorant graphic designer!”

Then it was her turn for stunned silence. After a few moments she said, "...but, the marketing pieces are gorgeous, they catch your eye, and they are really a work of art. And the designer says that customers will get to know our brand and the coupons and stuff will start turning up a big profit.

“Look. I don’t care what this designer is telling you.
