pieces?” Q - Are they getting a response? A Yeah! I just got a phone call yesterday from our staff and she said someone brought the coupon in. Q Just one? A No, no. We got like, 5 or 6 so far. Q So you've been using the coupon for 3 months and only got 5 or 6 so far? What about the newspaper ad, and how much have you spent so far." A Yes, we've only been marketing the coupon and newspaper ad for 3 months, the newspaper hasn't brought any customers in yet. All in all we've spent $5000.00 on the graphic designer, and about $1200.00 per month on the newspaper and coupon. Our graphic designer says that his work is unique because it will create brand awareness, and that I just have to keep placing the ads and coupons, and pretty soon we'll get lots of new customers in. After a few moments of stunned silence, I said to her, Let me get this straight. You spent around $8,600 so far, and you only got 5 or 6 new customers?! Umm Yes. Is that bad? Please forgive me if I sound harsh. Thats HORRIBLE! Youve been hoodwinked by an ignorant graphic designer! Then it was her turn for stunned silence. After a few moments she said, "...but, the marketing pieces are gorgeous, they catch your eye, and they are really a work of art. And the designer says that customers will get to know our brand and the coupons and stuff will start turning up a big profit. Look. I dont care what this designer is telling you. Brand advertising doesn't work for the small business owner, and it rarely works for the giant corporations that thrown hundreds of millions at it themselves. And what he is telling you is actually totally wrong. The more often you place an ad, the less response it gets. Not the other way around!" After giving her a few minutes to absorb what I was saying I said, "Here. E-mail me one of the ads and I'll bet you I can make it work" So we waited a few more minutes as it downloaded into my e-mail... Okay. The first thing that is wrong is that it's just one big picture of a gorgeous woman, and your company name. Nobody cares about your salon name, and the picture is really condescending. I want you to get rid of the picture, and only use your company name at the very end. What?! Are you nuts? That picture was the biggest expense in the whole thing. It cost me almost $5000.00! They hired a model, and a photographer came out to my salon with their lights. It's beautiful! Sorry, but nobody cares. People care about themselves. You have to grab their attention, and make an offer they can't refuse. This ad does none of those things. After she grumbled a bit more and made one final protest, she gave in. "...all right. I'll do what you say.... A month goes by and I get a phone call Brian
I am willing to admit when
I'm wrong, and I was wrong to listen to that graphic designer. I
